Anionic Surfactants

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), known as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as well, is a water-soluble anionic surfactant used for foaming, wetting, emulsification, and dispersion. It can be mixed with both anionic and nonionic surfactants and is often used in cleaning and foaming formulations.

SLS is found in many personal care and household products, including toothpaste, shampoos, cosmetics, and detergents, but it is also widely used in industrial formulations. It can be used as an auxiliary compound in textile, plastic, and leather processing, as well as in wool cleaning, wetting, and deinking applications. Sodium lauryl sulfate is also used in mineral flotation, coal-water slurry systems, rubber latex, PVC paste resin, oilfield formulations, some fire-fighting systems, and electrolytic manganese dioxide production. The grade and method of addition should be chosen based on the application and the formulation itself.
